Welcome to Oakland

A modern, diverse, cultural mecca in the San Francisco Bay

Situated on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay lies Oakland, a modern, diverse, cultural mecca. Home to museums, galleries, theaters, parks, and authentic foreign cuisines, there is something for everyone in Oakland. A major port city on the west coast, Oakland is the largest city in the East Bay region and the busiest port in the area. Surrounded by the cool waters and coastal breezes of the San Francisco Bay to the west and a towering, rugged landscape to the east, Oakland is both a historical city with a colorful background and a thriving economic hub built for the world of tomorrow.

Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Spanish settlers colonized the area in 1772. Both Native and Spanish influence is strong and visible today. Chinese immigration rapidly increased in the 1850s, leading to the development of a lively, vibrant Chinatown. Chinese culture is very prevalent in the city, with many authentic businesses still going strong today. This unique mix of cultures has formed one of the most diverse environments in all of America.

What to Love

  • The Oakland Zoo and Paramount Theater call Oakland home.
  • Dozens of museums open seven days a week pay tribute to the past while looking to draw lessons for the future.

Local Lifestyle

Oakland is a melting pot for an abundance of cultures and lifestyles. The city is heavily influenced by the rich history of natives, colonists, and immigrants from previous times. As the years have gone by, the Bay Area has grown at a rapid rate. With only 45 square miles in the city of San Francisco, Oakland has offered more affordable and spacious housing options without giving up city life. Those lucky enough to call Oakland home have a vast amount of culinary options at their fingertips. Many of these establishments have been in business for decades. Another major upside to life in Oakland is the immersion within a lively arts and culture scene. As growth in Oakland picked up at the turn of the 20th century, droves of artists led the pack, heavily influencing their new environments. Despite this high level of urban development, Oakland residents have access to plenty of parks and outdoor recreational activities throughout the city.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Oakland residents are some of the luckiest in the nation, with the sheer number of authentic eateries located just steps away from their homes. A little bit of everything can be found, but Mexican and Asian cuisines reign supreme. One thing they all have in common: you’ll find nothing but the most fresh ingredients used in every dish, often grown right in your own neighborhood.

One of the more upscale options can be found at Scott's, in Jack London Square. A part of the Oakland community for over 30 years, traditional seafood served right on the water is the name of the game here, with many dishes topped with creamy, California avocados. One other waterfront option is the Lake Chalet Seafood Bar & Grill. Situated within a renovated 100-year-old boathouse, they serve a diverse menu of modern Californian fare with a focus on seafood, and an often-busy raw bar.

Jack London Square, Oakland's publicly-accessible waterfront entertainment district, is the perfect place to take in the scenery while walking off your food coma. In addition to the top-rated sips and bites, it’s a favorite destination for shopping, live music, and people-watching.
Things To Do

A cultural mecca and haven for wildlife, there is no shortage of entertainment options within Oakland. The Oakland Zoo, established in 1922, is home to over 850 exotic and native animals. The largest wild animal veterinarian facility in Northern California is fully dedicated to protection and conservation of wildlife within the zoo, throughout the Bay Area, and across the globe. Another natural wonder can be found at Lake Merritt. A large tidal Lagoon in the center of Oakland, scenic Lake Merritt is surrounded by Parks and urban neighborhoods.
